Six nights of great entertainment
The melodrama in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi, to a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on the play by Alexandre Dumas son ‘La dame aux camélias’, was first performed at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice on 6 March 1853, and returns to the extraordinary setting of the Arena di Verona with the staging signed by Argentinean maestro Hugo De Ana.
One of the best known and most appreciated opera directors on an international level, De Ana stands out for his refined taste and careful work on details. His Traviata is entirely structured in a space intimately inspired, rather than conditioned, by the prestigious Arena context. The Arena of Verona thus becomes an integral part of the opera, in a scenic continuity that enhances the impact and elegance of a captivating picture.
La Traviata: a bourgeois drama that speaks to our present day
La Traviata tells the story of Violetta Valéry, a young retainer of Parisian high society who organises a party in her elegant flat.
During the reception, Violetta meets Alfredo Germont, a young man in love who makes a deep impression on her. Although she initially rejects him, Violetta is touched by Alfredo‘s sincerity and the strength of feeling he expresses, and invites him back the next day, leaving him a flower as a gift.
Left alone, Violetta reflects on her feelings. Although genuine love can change her life, she is reluctant to give up her freedom and independence. Her yearning for freedom clashes with her desire for love, revealing the inner conflict that holds her captive to her choices.
