Arena Opera Festival 2025: Aida returns to Verona with the visionary direction of Stefano Poda
TheArena of Verona is preparing to hostAida, one of Giuseppe Verdi’s most celebrated operas, in the prestigious context of theArena Opera Festival 2025.
This edition is characterised by the sumptuous touch of Stefano Poda, an italian artist who has supervised the direction, sets, costumes, lights and choreography of the performance, giving us a dense and evocative reinterpretation of Verdi’s classic.
Genesis and charm of Aida
Aida is an opera that saw the light of day in 1871, and was commissioned on the occasion of the opening of the Suez Canal. It is a majestic work, immune to the passage of time, in which Verdi amplified the dramatic impact of the events narrated through accurate and incisive writing, and music that was as experimental for the time as it was enveloping and penetrating right into the recesses of the characters’ souls.
For those unfamiliar with the plot, the opera revolves around two triangles: a love triangle, involving Radames, Aida and Amneris, and a political triangle, consisting of the King, Ramfis and Amonasro. These two plans intertwine in complex ways, revealing deep-rooted conflicts and forbidden loves, against the backdrop of an Ancient Egypt reinterpreted following an ideal imagery rather than a correct historical reconstruction.
Aida and the Arena of Verona
The Arena of Verona has become a symbolic venue for the performance ofAida, ever since it was first staged in 1913 and revived over the years in editions characterised by Pier Luigi Pizzi’s cobalt-blue minimalism and the experimentation of the Catalan theatre company La Fura dels Baus, up to the controversial magniloquence of Franco Zeffirelli’s staging.
